Will Schuester is a high school teacher, and former Glee Club member who is given the job to transform the rejects of McKinley High into a bunch of talented performers. He is on the lookout for a male singer who can keep up with is "diva" Rachel. He finds this is the oddest of places. The locker room where Finn, quarterback for the High School football team, is heard singing in the shower. Meanwhile, Will's wife Terri is telling him to get a better job that will bring in extra money for her to spend at her leisure.
Recap:
The scene opens with cheerleaders doing their routine while the coach stares at them judging. After they get done she tells that if they thought the practice was complicated, they need to be waterboarded, Meanwhile, Will Schuester arrives at school and sees Football players about to toss Kurt into one of the dumpsters outside. Will passes by and ask if Kurt is making friends and walks away. Finn, the quarterback, keeps a hold of Kurt's jacket as they dump him into the dumpster claiming it to be a lot of money and brand new.
Will enters the school and glances at the trophy case in the hall. They pan to a 1993 Glee Club trophy and Will remembers the choir teacher that he had when he was in Glee Club who is now deceased. Meanwhile, Sandy Ryerson, is in the music room. He is accompanying on the piano while a student follows a piece from Oliver. Sandy and the male student start to sing together and Sandy touches him inappropriately. A girl is watching the whole thing from a distance.
Will talks to Ken, the football coach, and tells that there is no coffee in the teacher's lounge. Sue comes into the lounge and has lattes for everyone. Emma enters and Ken, who is attracted to Emma, attempts to flirt with her but she is not interested at all. However, her eyes are set on Will, who is married. Emma is a germaphobe that can't stand a mess. This accounts for her being single who is constantly looking for love. Emma tells Will that the Glee Coach was fired for inappropriate touching and asks if he knows who will fill the position.
Will goes in to see Principal Figgins and takes the job as the new Glee Coach almost by accident. However, he is going to have to pay up from his own reserves because of the fact that the school is low budgeted for such an extracurricular activity. He has auditions for the Glee Club and an eager Mercedes is up first to audition. She sings "Respect" and Will is surprised. Kurt auditions next and sings "Mr. Cellophane" The auditions continue and next up is Tina, a shy Asian girl with a stutter. However this doesn't stop her as she sings "I kissed a girl" Rachel comes to the audition room and sings "On My Own". Rachel admits that she was the girl to catch Sandy touching the boy from earlier. She tells Will that she is going to be a famous singer one day and tells that she has two gay fathers and is a little spoiled when she doesn't have things go her way. She tells Will that she makes a video every day and gets teased for it too.
Artie, a geek in a wheelchair, is a great guitarist and joins up with the Glee Club. Right away, Rachel thinks that they all suck and doesn't leave herself out of the judging. She wants to call it quits but Will tells her to stay. She tells that she needs someone who can match up to her talent. Meanwhile, Terri is at "Sheet N Things" and she is very agitated. She yells at a co-worker and tells that he is not allowed to work at the job if he is unable to fold sheets. Will comes up and gives her some lunch. She tells that mayonnaise is giving her diabetes and says that if she eats it, she won't get pregnant. Will sees Sandy, the teacher who got fired talking to Ken, the football coach. Sandy gives a bag of marijuana to the coach and they walk out.
Will returns to the school and asks Sue if she could get her girls to join the Glee Club so they could get the popularity vote and not be treated unfairly. Will tries the football team and all laugh and tells that is the worst choice. However, upon leaving, he hears Finn, the quarterback, singing in the shower. He chooses to do something bad and try to blackmail him so that he would join up. Rachael and Finn sing "Your The One That I Want" and knows that Glee Club is saved because Rachel is attracted to him.
Will returns home and Terri is putting together a puzzle. They argue about her spending habits and she argues that Will needs to be making more money and to give up High School. Back at school, Emma decides that she is going to chaperon with Will for the competition and they need Finn. However, his ties of football first get in the way. Finn tells that someone's mom has prostate cancer and that he can't make the competition. Ken is mad because he feels that Will has taken away Finn and not to mention his wannabe girlfriend Emma. But it is clear that Emma likes Will. Rachel tells that Finn and her should be together as a couple since they are in the lead together. However, her dreams are crushed when he tells her that he is dating Quinn, the head cheerleader, who is also the president of the Celibacy Club. Will comes clean to Emma about his rocky marriage with his wife.
Competition time and they watch "Vocal Adrenaline" perform "Rehab". They are really good and they have 36 people in the group. Tina feels that they are going to lose right away. Meanwhile, Puck, Finn's teammate, tells everyone that Finn lied and that women don't have prostates. Will starts to think maybe the job as an accountant is not that bad. Puck teases Finn about the Glee Club and Finn tells that he quit. Puck shows that he has Artie, the geek in the wheelchair, stuck inside a port-a-potty. Instead of rolling it like Puck wants, he lets him go and tells that Puck is a loser. He tells that he is not going to quit anything and joins Glee.
Finn arrives with the rest of the Glee Club and says that he is sorry. He says that he is going to work it out so that he can play football and be in the Glee Club. Emma is working on Will on staying and shows a tape when Will was in Nationals himself. He tells that he won't quit and will do the thing that makes him happy. Will goes back to the Glee Club and the group are all singing "Don't Stop Believing".
